Dead Census Worker Memorialized
A memorial service is scheduled Monday in Laurel County for a US census worker. The body of 51 year-old Bill Sparkman was found by a family visiting a nearby cemetery September 12th in a remote area of southeast Kentucky. The part-time census worker and substitute teacher had a rope was around his neck and the word 'Fed' scrawled on his chest.
The state medical examiner's office says Sparkman died of asphyxiation, but whether that was the result of homicide, suicide or an accident has not been determined.
The Census Bureau has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County where the body was found, pending the outcome of the investigation. Memorial services will be held at a church in Sparkman's hometown of London, Kentucky.
