Manager Search Begins for Lyric Theater
(2009-10-22)
(WEKU) -

In less than a year, a renovated Lyric theater is scheduled to open in downtown Lexington. The Lyric, which closed in 1963, was a leading entertainment center in the city's African American community. City leaders are now discussing the theater's management.

One proposal has its board members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Urban County Council on an going basis.

Lexarts CEO Jim Clark says such a policy could interfere as the theater tries to make itself self-supporting.

"Which I think would really hinder fundraising efforts and have the perception that the government is gonna be there to pay for the operations on a year to year basis," Clark said.

Clark favors the establishing of an independent board for the Lyric. He says decisions about which acts should perform at the theater should probably be made by an executive director.
