Lexington Trick-or-Treaters Avoid Football Rush
(2009-10-21)
(WEKU) -

Lexington area trick-or-treaters get an extra hour this year to canvass their neighborhoods for goodies. The Urban County Council has agreed to start trick or treat an hour earlier, from five to eight pm.

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry says the seven o' clock start of the University of Kentucky - Mississippi State football game weighed on the minds of city leaders.

"You know there's some family members who may prefer to do it earlier there's some that may prefer to do it later and by extending it to three hours rather than the normal two hour period it'll give people the opportunity to do as they please," Newberry said.

Newberry says it was a near consensus that the Halloween celebration remain on October 31st. The council took action several years ago to ensure trick or treating was not moved from the traditional Halloween date.
