The Economy Project
Employment Opportunities for Senior Citizens
Federal funding is increasing job opportunities for senior citizens in Kentucky. This year the Senior Community Service Employment Program is offering more than a thousand jobs to older Kentuckians.
Program participants must be 55 and older, work 20 hours a week and make minimum wage, according to spokeswoman Juanita Shackelford.
"The purpose of this program is to employ seniors part-time, and we say employment, but it is really a training program," she said. "So it's really to help seniors re-train and get back into employment or get back into the job market."
Shackelford says participants usually work for non-profit organizations or state and government agencies. Jobs are individualized but usually consist of office work or data entry.
