Republicans Side With Bunning on Health Care Bill
(2009-10-14)
(WEKU) -

Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning joined eight Republicans in opposing the health care bill passed Tuesday by the Senate Finance Committee.

Initial analysis of the bill says it will actually reduce the deficit by around 80 billion dollars over the next decade. But the Congressional Budget Office also says its price tag is 829 billion dollars. With a cost that high, just one Republican supported the measure. Bunning says the proposal is paid for on the backs of the middle class and small businesses.

"This package is going in the wrong direction. Spending more and taxing more without covering more people," Bunning said.

The non-partisan CBO contradicts Bunning. It says the bill extends coverage to 29 million people. That could have a big impact for the more than 600,000 Kentuckians who don't have health insurance. The health care battle will continue as the measure moves before the full Senate.
