Double Shifts Could Shorten Limestone Construction
(2009-10-14)
(WEKU) -

A proposal that accelerates road work on South Limestone was presented Tuesday at Lexington City Hall. It was the second straight week of discussion by members of the Urban County Council. Public Works Commissioner Mike Webb says crews from Kentucky Utilities could work double shifts, shortening the project by 44 days.

But that, Webb says, would cost another $850,000. Council member Peggy Henson asked contractor Harry Burchett three questions which are on the minds of many business owners along South Limestone.

"All I want to know, simply, is what was the original end day on the project, what is the end date now and when will the streets open. July one, July one, and July one," Henson said.

Merchants along South Limestone complain construction has dramatically cut their income, cutting them off from their customers. Burchett would not guarantee double shifts will shorten the construction schedule. For example, he says cold winter weather will slow concrete work. The council took no action at yesterday's meeting.
