UK Promotes Horseback Rider Safety
Horse riding is an activity many people enjoy. But judging from the 213 admissions to the University of Kentucky hospital over the past two years, the sport has its risks. A five-year educational campaign kicked off today to address concerns. It's called 'Saddle Up Safely.'
UK College of Agriculture Associate Dean for Research Nancy Cox says they'll distributed a booklet on equine safety.
"It includes such factors as wearing a helmet, making sure that you understand all the aspects of horsemanship, making sure that when you ride, you ride in a safe environment with good equipment, and your boots are the right type of boots to promote safety," Cox said.
A 2007 study found 27% of injuries were caused by riders who asked horses to perform beyond their abilities. Another study blamed 19% of serious injuries on riding under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
