UK Exhibits Solar Home Technology
A solar house designed at the University of Kentucky is almost ready for its roadshow. The 800 square foot house, a collaboration between UK students and faculty, will be trucked to Washington to compete in the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition.
The house has 42 solar panels incorporated into it's structure. Greg Luhan with UK's College of Design says it's a far cry from the first solar homes decades ago.
"What I'm really excited about is the next steps of this house, and then that's when you get into mass production. The economies of scale driving down costs," Luhan said.
Co-principal Investigator Don Colliver of the UK College of Agriculture says over time these types of solar home systems will be used in Kentucky. He says the scope of the competition limited the size of the solar house. UK grad student Ross Graham says building the house was a great real life experience.
