Newtown Pike Construction Closings
Construction work on Lexington's Newtown Pike extension will close several nearby roads over the next year.
If construction crews stay on schedule, the city hopes to open a one-mile, four-lane corridor along Newtown Pike between Main Street and Versailes Road before this time next year, just in time for the World Equestrian Games.
But, State Transportation Branch Manager Steve Farmer says finishing touches on this section of the project won't be done until the end of 2010.
"Right now we're working with the contractor we're working with the utilities companies we're still there's some utilities that have to be re-located so we're making our efforts to keep that schedule and we'll see how it goes," Farmer said.
Next month, Farmer says a portion of Main Street from its intersection with Newtown Pike to Lexington Cemetery will close for about two weeks. Next year, Farmer says there will be occasional closures along Manchester, Pine, and Cox Streets. Tuesday night in Lexington, the state transportation department sponsored a public question and answer session on their plans for the extension.
