EKU Student Finds Personal Info Leak
Officials at Eastern Kentucky University are sealing a massive breach in online security. Last Friday, they discovered the personal information, including social security numbers, of over 5,000 students and staff posted on the internet.
The director of information technology at EKU says the leak was found by a technician who was using the Google search engine.
"It was immediately reported to our system administrators, who removed the file immediately and began the process of trying to identify what had happened, how it had gotten there, and how we could make sure it had not been compromised."
The personal information had been on EKU's website for nearly a year, but, Mona Isaacs says there's no evidence anyone outside the university accessed the data. Isaacs believes the posting was accidental. Nevertheless, she promises Eastern will re-examine and enhance its security measures.
