Virginia Regulates Charitable Gaming
(2009-09-16)
(Virginia Public Radio) -

A joint subcommittee studying Virginia's charitable gaming laws is hearing games like Bingo no longer draw big crowds. Now, lobbyists are asking lawmakers to take charitable gaming to another level.

The revenue raised through Bingo and similar games contributes significantly to the economic vitality of charitable organizations, but because of the poor economy fewer people are playing.

During public hearings, citizens generally opposed changing the per-game prize amount and the number of gaming nights. Delegate Dave Albo said the panel must now weigh the pros and cons of some new proposals.

Albo said while most organizations mean well, some individuals will attempt to line their pockets. Limiting the types of games that are played makes it easier to regulate.
