Senate rejects order to abolish a state department
(2009-08-28)
(wnmu) - The Republican-controlled Michigan Senate has voted 23-113 to reject an executive order from Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm to abolish the State Department of History, Arts and Libraries, and disperse its functions among a half-dozen other state agencies. The senate voted mostly along party lines Thursday to reject Granholm's order. The chamber also voted to move the cultural department's functions to the Secretary of State's office. Republicans argue the department's functions would be better maintained if all managed from the same place. The Senate legislation next goes to the Democrat-led house. Granholm's order takes effect October 1st unless the house rejects it by September 11th. © Copyright 2012, wnmu
