UK Fusion Program Gets Students Involved
(2009-08-25)
(WEKU) - The University of Kentucky's Fusion' program has grown by about a thousand participants in its 7 year history. Student, faculty and staff volunteers spread out to take part in community service projects at 91 sites today.

Annie Tu is a freshman from Henderson, Kentucky.

She says, "College is about meeting new people if you can do it and do something good for the community at the same time that's awesome."

UK fusion associate director Mary Kate Fields says the 1,400 participant goal was exceeded this year. She says individuals ranging from children to the elderly benefit from Fusion.

Projects this year were also in communities on the outskirts of Lexington. Fields says an effort was made to reach out beyond the UK campus area.

Fields says, "An effort was made this year to extend out beyond the Lexington campus tried to branch out to sites that were a little bit farther from campus usually we try and stay closer to campus just so it's easier but we thought it would be really go to try and kinda go to the outskirts of the city too and try to reach people that way too."

Junior Joe Lowther believes the event helps the community and fosters friendships as well.

"It's a good way to meet people but it seems like a real good thing to do for the community as well."
