Lexington Hosts Pie Contest
(2009-07-01)
(Kentucky Public Radio) - Lexington's 4th of July celebration is officially underway with the holiday's pie contest and ice cream social.

It was a scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting Wednesday as Lexington's Cheapside Park was alive with the sound of Dixieland music and the succulent smells of fresh-baked pies in the city's annual Great American Pie Contest and Ice Cream Social. The event traditionally kicks off Lexington's Fourth of July Festival.

The judging was close, but Barbara Pollitt of Missy's Pies took top honors in the professional category, and Barbara Harper-Bach garnered first and second place respectively in the amateur baker division. Right after the results were announced, we caught both winners swapping recipe tips.

Culinary instructors from Sullivan University had the somewhat unenviable task of judging the record 55 entries. Onlookers were also treated to free pie and ice cream, too.
