Stepping Up Enforcement for the 4th
(2009-06-30)
(WEKU) - This holiday weekend, police officers will work overtime patrolling Kentucky roadways. The Kentucky Office of Highway Patrol will fund tougher enforcement across the state. Executive Director Chuck Geveden said the July 4th crackdown will target drunk drivers. Geveden calls it one of the most important enforcement campaigns of the year.

"A lot of times they feel like they are not going to get caught, or they feel like they are okay to drive, or they just have a short distance to go, or whatever it may be, but the fact is they are driving impaired and the statistics show that if you are impaired then the chances of you having a crash and causing serious injury to yourself or others and possibly even a fatality is increased," Geveden said.

So far this year, 315 people have died on Kentucky roadways. Alcohol was suspected in 84 of those fatalities. The Drunk Driving enforcement campaign begins Thursday.
