Food Banks Buy from Farmers
(2009-06-22)
(WEKU) - God's Pantry Food Bank will be an eager bidder at produce auctions in Bath and Lincoln Counties. Over the next 13 weeks, God's Pantry will participate in a new pilot program called Farms to Food Banks. CEO Marian Guinn says the surplus produce they buy will be distributed among 50 Kentucky counties.

"These products wouldn't have a market otherwise," Guinn said. "They will be fruits and vegetables that don't meet the grade of the retailer but are absolutely in good shape and will provide wonderful nutrition to low income Kentuckians."

The funds come from a bill passed by the General Assembly last March. Guinn says this pilot program will help determine the amount of funding they'll need in 2010 when the program goes statewide.
