Bridge Project Slated for Next 15 Years
(2009-06-19)
(WEKU) - Motorists may not drive over two proposed major Louisville bridges for another 15 years. Members of the Senate Transportation Committee got an update on Thursday as they considered a financing plan.

The Kentucky House approved legislation that allows the formation of infrastructure authorities. Those entities could impose tolls on motorists to help pay off bonds on the projects. Owensboro Senator David Boswell said as the financing of the bridge projects is put off, the cost rises for citizens.

"So bottom line is the longer we wait to deal with this issue the more the burden to the taxpayers as it goes," Boswell said.

Mike Hancock with the State Transportation Cabinet said the bridges linking Louisville with southern Indiana may not be completed until 2024. He said a long term financing plan is needed to move work along on the four billion dollar projects.
