Transportation Projects Need Oversight
(2009-06-18)
(WEKU) - The head of the Senate Transportation Committee anticipates some modification in the House-approved mega projects legislation. The bill approved today in the House allows for the establishment of tolls to pay for large construction projects. Those could be carried out through what's known as infrastructure authorities.

First in line would likely be two proposed bridges spanning the Ohio River from Louisville to southern Indiana. Senate Transportation Committee Chair Ernie Harris said legislative oversight could be an issue.

"Where is the legislative oversight? The General Assembly oversight in approving of bonding authority tying any future bridges or any future construction like this mega projects into the six year road plan?" Harris said.

Harris said some members want to make sure the finance plan for the authorities is viable and affordable. He said a committee vote could be held Friday.
