Seatbelt Campaign Proves Successful
(2009-06-10)
(WEKU) - Over 500 drivers were ticketed last month in Kentucky for failing to use seatbelts. The crackdown was part of the Click it or Ticket campaign. According to police statistics, about 65% of people killed in car accidents did not wear seatbelts. By issuing tickets, State Trooper Dean Patterson said Kentucky's police deliver a tough message.

"You know obviously the more seatbelts citations we write we feel that's getting the message to people to wear those seatbelts and hopefully reduce serious injury accidents and fatalities also," Patterson said.

He says seatbelt restrictions are easier to enforce since the General Assembly toughed the law However, this year there have been 14 more deaths on Kentucky roadways than in 2008.
