Citizens Group Appeals Recycling Decision
(2009-06-05)
(WEKU) - A group calling itself Citizens for Responsible Government has appealed to Ashland city commissioners to rethink their decision not to partner with Boyd County in a recycling program.

Carla Jaenicke spoke for the organization at last night's commission meeting.

She thinks commissioners were ill-informed when they rejected a plan to operate a joint recycling center with the fiscal court. At the time, some of them said they didn't want to compete with private business and also had concerns about the proposed use of non-violent felons in the center.

Jaenicke says there are plenty of public recycling facilities all over Kentucky, and reservations about prison labor in such an operation seem peculiar to her.
Jaenicke says Ashlanders feel Rumpke's current recycling program, which involves six drop-off locations, is inadequate. She says people want curbside pickup.
