Derby Winner Goes to Belmont Stakes
(2009-06-04)
(WEKU) - The jockey, not necessarily the race horse, will be in the spotlight during Saturday's Belmont Stakes. Calvin Borel rode "Mine that Bird" to a Kentucky Derby win and then won the Preakness while atop "Rachel Alexandra." Borel's back on "Mine that Bird" Saturday. According to former jockey Chris McCarron, another win by Borel will be a victory for all riders.

"I just think it's a wonderful opportunity for jockeys to gain the respect and the admiration that I believe the career and this particular job deserves," McCarron said.

McCarron, who manages the North America Racing Academy for jockeys, says "Mine that Bird" requires a skilled rider. Since the horse likes to come from behind, McCarron says, the jockey must carefully manage the pace and navigate the traffic.
