Jefferson Starts on School Improvements
(2009-06-01)
(WEKU) - The academic year ends Wednesday for Jefferson County Public Schools students, and it also marks the start of improvement projects at several district schools. The school calendar was extended this year because of days lost to power outages from the September wind storm and January ice storm.

Facilities and Transportation Director Mike Mulheirn said JCPS has six major renovation projects at schools this summer, such as replacing heating and cooling systems. He said contractors are on notice about the shortened schedule, but the district is able to save money because of the more competitive construction market.

"Even though the contractors might be having to work additional overtime hours to get all of this work done within an eight week period, that was offset by the lowering of materials and things like that," Mulheim said.

Mulheirn said JCPS is working with its insurance company and FEMA to get reimbursed for extra expenditures during the ice storm recovery.
