Safety A Concern for Memorial Day Weekend
(2009-05-22)
(WEKU) - The Memorial Day weekend signals a return to the water for boaters across Kentucky. Sherri Hannan with the Safe Kids Fayette County Coalition said even seasoned swimmers should never try to outdistance their ability.

"You want to try and challenge yourself, make sure that there is a boat that's following at least nearby that you can get your attention that if you start to get too tired that you can get help so that you're not stuck in the water," Hannan said.

Hannan's advice for summer boating also includes having a working carbon monoxide detector on board, even on boats without a cabin. She says everyone should wear a life jacket in or out of the water. Hannan adds that alcohol consumption on the waterways can lead to dangerous consequences.
