Lexington Celebrates National Day of Prayer
(2009-05-07)
(WEKU) - Several Kentuckians representing public agencies offered up prayers in downtown Lexington this afternoon. It was in in observance of the National Day of Prayer.

The annual ceremony in Phoenix park included prayers for families, government officials, educators, business leaders, military men and women, and reporters.

Commerce Lexington C-E-O Bob Quick says "In the business community, the thing that we try to do is create wealth. And we need to do it in a way that we are not greedy. To where we are trying to line our pockets or put ourselves above others. To create wealth that ultimately goes back into improving the quality of life."

Margaret Thirkelson, who has taught at three state universities and three private schools was also there.

She says, "Public prayer is something that seems as evident today as it was in the founding of the country. I think there is more fear, perhaps, with things as they are. It's a humbling of the mighty human being, and so in that humbling, it's instinctive that we turn to God in prayer."
