Community Cares honors Jhpiego as this month's recipient
BALTIMORE, MD
(weaa) -
Jhpiego is an international non-profit organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University dedicated in strengthening the delivery of healthcare services to women and families. Commenced nearly four decades ago, a group of physicians decided to start this organization as a means to look at the reproductive health in women in 145 countries around the world. With this in mind, Jhpiego evolved and has been instrumental since in helping many by putting evidence-based health innovations into everyday practice. Focusing primarily on maternal newborn health, HIV/AIDS, malaria in pregnancies and cervical cancer, Jhpiego is committed to helping health workers in many countries by designing and implementing effective, low-cost, hands-on solutions and helping the workers to learn the latest knowledge and science. With the assistance of thousands of nurses, doctors and midwives worldwide, this organization has grown to embrace new challenges including HIV/AIDS, malaria and cervical cancer prevention. Jhpiego is now a partner with many countries worldwide all with one goal in mind--"saving the lives of women." In 2008, Jhpiego's ACCESS program protected more than 8.3 million women of reproductive age from postpartum hemorrhage, and there are now signs that the number of postpartum hemorrhage cases has been reduced in six countries. Currently working in 55 countries with a staff of 500 doctors, nurses and midwives, Jhpiego has also assisted many by instilling programs and testing so women and adults know about their status with HIV/AIDS which in turn, also helps the health workers in these countries know how to care for these families. "There's many success stories with the development of Jhpiego but our goal is believing that a woman's life is worth saving and if you save a woman you will impact the women, children and families in the community and in the world," says President and CEO Leslie Mancuso.
