The Prairie Wind Ensemble Concert – Friday, May 9, 2014
The Prairie Wind Ensemble, in residence at Illinois Central College, will present its final concert of the season on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. This concert will be presented in the Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center in East Peoria, Illinois. The concert will feature the winner of the Earl Barnes Student Soloist Competition, Mallika Patel.
In 1982, the Board of Directors of the Prairie Wind Ensemble established a competition for talented students residing in the Peoria [Illinois] area. The competition was named in honor of a charter member of the ensemble, Mr. Earl Barnes. "Barney" played trombone in the band from its inception in 1978 until 1992. At the age of 88 he moved to California in order to be close to his family. Barney was an inspiration to all who have had the opportunity to be with him and we trust that his legacy will be an inspiration to the young musicians who have been a part of this competition.
The concert, “Celebrations”, will feature music by American composers. Some music performed will include American Overture for Band by Joseph Willcox Jenkins, Celebration by Philip Sparke, Amazing Grace by Frank Ticheli and West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.
Our soloist, Mallika Patel, will perform the Irish tune, Spirit of the Shannon by Catherine McMichael.
