The Prairie Wind Ensemble Concert – Friday, May 9, 2014

The Prairie Wind Ensemble, in residence at Illinois Central College, will present its final concert of the season on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. This concert will be presented in the Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center in East Peoria, Illinois. The concert will feature the winner of the Earl Barnes Student Soloist Competition, Mallika Patel.

In 1982, the Board of Directors of the Prairie Wind Ensemble established a competition for talented students residing in the Peoria [Illinois] area. The competition was named in honor of a charter member of the ensemble, Mr. Earl Barnes. "Barney" played trombone in the band from its inception in 1978 until 1992. At the age of 88 he moved to California in order to be close to his family. Barney was an inspiration to all who have had the opportunity to be with him and we trust that his legacy will be an inspiration to the young musicians who have been a part of this competition.

The concert, “Celebrations”, will feature music by American composers. Some music performed will include American Overture for Band by Joseph Willcox Jenkins, Celebration by Philip Sparke, Amazing Grace by Frank Ticheli and West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.

Our soloist, Mallika Patel, will perform the Irish tune, Spirit of the Shannon by Catherine McMichael.

Dr. Joseph Manfredo is an Associate Professor of Music for the School of Music at Illinois State University. At ISU, Manfredo is the Coordinator of Music Education and teaches undergraduate courses in instrumental music education. In addition, he is coordinator of the student teaching program. Dr. Manfredo is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. He has conducted various All-State Bands and Honor Bands throughout the mid-west and southeast United States.

Mallika Patel is a junior at Metamora Township High School and is the youngest daughter of Subhash and Marlynn Patel. Mallika began taking piano lessons at age 7 and she currently studies with Pam Eyerly. She began pursuing the flute in fifth grade, playing in the band at Germantown Hills Middle School, taking private lessons with Tina Holloway from 5th-7th grades, and continuing her flute studies in 8th grade and beyond with Angela Loring. Mallika has participated in the ILMEA District Festival every year since 7th grade, earning principal flute positions in three of the ensembles within the past two years: District III Concert Band (2012), District III Concert Orchestra (2013), and All-State Honors Orchestra (2014). She participates yearly in IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest, where she was awarded the Best of Day certificate for her flute performance this past March. She has participated in the University of Illinois Summer Youth Music Symphonic Band and also studied with Amy Porter at the University of Michigan Summer Flute Institute. In addition to playing in the Central Illinois Youth Symphony, she is currently co-principal of the Metamora Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Wally Parks. She also does bharatanatyam (classical Indian dance), volunteers with the Junior Red Cross, and is a member of MTHS Student Council, Key Club, National Honor Society, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Choir, track, and tennis.
