MTHS will host JazzFest 2014 with the NIU Jazz Ensemble and special guest, Donald Harrison.
Rated as “one of the top ten graduate jazz programs in the country” by U.S. News & World Report, the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble, is coming to Metamora Township High School on Saturday, February 1st. Their director, Ronald Carter, who has continually gained high critical acclaim, is retiring after 20 years with NIU.
Referred to as “my band” by Dizzy Gillespie, the ensemble has appeared in concert and recording sessions with dozens of top jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Marian McPartland, and Louis Bellson. This list is even surpassed by the band’s impressive inventory of high honors and prestigious awards earned since it’s modest beginning in 1969.
This year, NIU Jazz Ensemble brings to Metamora a special guest artist, Donald Harrison. Born in New Orleans, Harrison’s jazz roots are deep, melding funk with cutting edge jazz. Currently involved with at least 6 bands, he is also a singer, writer, actor, composer, inventor and costume maker.
JazzFest 2014 will take place at the Kenneth H. Maurer Performing Arts Center, Metamora Township High School, on Saturday, February 1st, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available, $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and can be purchased at the high school main office or by contacting LuAnn Debolt at (309) 367-4151, extension 574, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
