Over 3.3 million dollars in federal stimulus funds will further homelessness prevention efforts in Central Ohio.

As part of the federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is spending 1.5 billion dollars to prevent homelessness and re-house people who are on the street as quickly as possible. Columbus is scheduled to receive $2,642,649. This week city council voted to have the Community Shelter Board spearhead programs to spend the money. Shelter Board director Barbara Poppe tells Alison Holm the money -- along with an anticipated $746,920 to pass through the county -- will preserve some programs already in place -- and save some from the budget axe.null
