Swine Flu & Communion
The Catholic Archdiocese of Winnipeg is discouraging handshaking among churchgoers because of the H1N1 flu virus.
Dioceses in Michigan take direction from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Many have posted H1N1 information on their Web sites, but have not been directed by the bishops to take any other action yet.
Matt Treadwell is the Director of Communications for the Diocese of Saginaw. He says the U.S. Bishops suggest churches inform people about safety practices.
"To be aware, you know, to share with the congregation some of the good hygiene practices some of the ways to avoid spreading the disease that have been mentioned by the government," says Treadway.
Treadwell says they're taking the usual precautions, suggesting people who feel sick refrain from drinking from the communion cup or greeting others with a handshake. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
