Problem Gambling Risk Increases with Economic Woes
(2009-03-03)
(WBFO) - The stock market is in the tank. Many Americans are losing their homes. And millions are out of work. Professionals who treat gambling addicts worry that such desperate times might lead more people to desperate measures. And some legislative proposals could make it more tempting. That's why counselors say it's never been more urgent to alert people to the dangers of gambling.

WBFO's Joyce Kryszak talked with Joni Maxick-Jason from Northpointe Council in Niagara Falls. The gambling prevention specialist explains what's at stake.

National Gambling Awareness Week kicked off Sunday. And it couldn't be more timely. Many people hit by the failing economy are looking for ways to pull themselves out of the hole. Maxick-Jason tells us why some people - and the governor - mistakenly think gambling is the answer.
