Williams says the District's plan to close five schools by the end this school year is an effort to deal with declining enrollment and prepare for any fall out from the massive state budget deficit. But Williams promises that the community won't be left out of the decision making process.
In fact Williams says the School board will not be acting on the proposal until community meetings are held and a recommendation is returned to board members.
Under the plan, the Poplar Academy, Community School 53, Montessori School 78, the Science Magnet School at the Buffalo Zoo and Days Park Bilingual Early Childhood Center would close next June. The district would also phase out Middle College over the next four years. The closings would save an estimated $3 million. Williams also promises that no jobs would be lost with the school closings.
