Monitoring Crime at Buffalo-Cheektowaga Border
(2008-09-04)
New surveillance camera at the corner of Poplar & Walden Avenues at the Buffalo-Cheektowaga border
(WBFO) - The City of Buffalo and Cheektowaga are joining forces to fight crime at a troublesome street corner.

A new surveillance camera is now in place at the corner of Walden and Poplar Avenues.

Residents living at the Buffalo/Cheektowaga border near Walden say the area has been a hot spot of criminal activity.

Lovejoy District Council member Richard Fontana says block club residents continue to keep him posted on the activity. Resident Stephanie Rogers says there has been a variety of troubles. Carol Johnson is a block club president. She says the new camera has stopped some people from hanging out at the corner, but more police patrols area needed. Other residents, like Gwendlyn Cruise-Hunt, says there has been a noticeable improvement.

State and federal funds allowed for the purchase the new camera. It will be integrated into Buffalo's surveillance monitoring system. Mayor Byron Brown joined Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Mary Holtz and other leaders to show off the new camera Wednesday. They say crime does not end at the borders of the first ring suburbs.
