(WBFO) - Five men have been convicted in Sudan in the January 2008 murder of American diplomat, John Granville. He was a Buffalo native.

The Associated Press and Buffalo News are reporting that four of the men face the death penalty. William Hochul of the U.S. Attorney's office in Buffalo briefed Granville's family today. The five men were described by Sudanese authorities as extremists who despised Americans. They were found guilty of ambushing Granville and his driver as they were returning from a New Year's celebration.

Granville worked as a diplomat with the U.S. Agency for International Development. In a statement released by the Granville family, his mother said his death was a loss for the family but also for the people Sudan. Granville was a 1993 graduate of Canisius High School in Buffalo. © Copyright 2009, WBFO
