Lafayette schools working to boost standardized testing scores
(2008-09-23)
LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
The Lafayette School Corporation is continuing efforts to improve standardized testing scores. Superintendent Ed Eiler says the corporation is using a new behavior support system for learning disabled students as well as academic support coaches for teachers.
Eiler says the state uses the I-STEP to measure adequate yearly progress.
He says the federal No Child Left Behind Act and state Public Law 221 require a stair-step approach to improvement.
Last year's goal was for 65 percent of students to pass the I-STEP. This year, that rises to 72 percent, with the goal of 100 percent of students passing by 2014.
Two LSC schools--Miami and Miller Elementary--are both considered in improvement status after failing to make adequate yearly progress in the past.
Eiler fears the tougher standards this year will put more of the corporation's schools in jeopardy. © Copyright 2009, wbaa
