IN Commission for Higher Ed looking to expand college scholarships
(2008-09-10)
INDIANAPOLIS, IN
(wbaa) -
Indiana's Commission for Higher Education wants to move Indiana's college graduation rate into the top 10 nationwide by 2012. The organization has released a 31-point strategic plan to encourage more students to attend college, and make sure more of those students graduate.
Higher Education Commissioner Stan Jones says initiatives include simplifying state financial aid, imposing tougher standards for new elementary and high school teachers, and eliminating remedial courses at four-year colleges.
Jones says the strategic plan also includes backing a plan to expand state-sponsored college scholarships to middle-income students.
The idea was proposed by Governor Mitch Daniels and has been supported by Democratic challenger Jill Long Thompson.
