Groups try to solve hunger problem in Lafayette area
(2008-09-03)
LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
Representatives from area food pantries are discussing the needs of their clients in Greater Lafayette. According to a survey conducted by the Alliance to End Hunger, about 37% of Americans have cut back on the amount of food they buy.
And with rising food and gas costs, Patti O'Callaghan with the Lafayette Urban Ministry says it is important to gather area food providers to see if they can fill in the gaps.
O'Callaghan says the most recent poverty statistics also served as a catalyst for the gathering.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 37.3 million Americans were living in poverty in 2007.
O'Callaghan plans to have the food pantry representatives to meet again for another brainstorming session. © Copyright 2009, wbaa
