Experiment hopes to regenerate forests (wbaa) - Purdue researchers are studying how to promote forest growth following natural or man-made clearing.

The Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment is looking for the best way to regenerate valuable oak and hickory forests, while also protecting plants and animals.

Project Coordinator Cortney Mycroft says its not easily accomplished.

Mycroft says the experiment will take place over the next century in the Morgan-Monroe and Yellowood state forests.

Researchers will grow trees at different rates, using several strategies, to see which works best.
