A.G. and Supt. candidates back school discipline idea
(2008-08-25)
LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
Governor Mitch Daniels has proposed using the state attorney general's office to defend teachers sued for disciplining a student. The Republicans running for attorney general and superintendent of public instruction say they support the idea.
Tony Bennett says as a superintendent, he knows the cost of defending or settling such lawsuits can add up. He thinks taking more cases to court will save money.
Chief Deputy Attorney General Greg Zoeller says if he's elected, he will begin defending teachers immediately.
He says school corporations must make a request, which often is not done now.
Zoeller pledges to defend all cases through the appeals process, if necessary. He faces Linda Pence for the attorney general post this November.
