LSC's Miller Elementary instituting longer hours
(2009-08-13)
(wbaa) - The Lafayette School Corporation is putting in place a restructuring plan for Miller Elementary.

Superintendent Ed Eiler says students will spend an extra hour each day in class, from 8:10 until 3:45. He says children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade at-risk of failing the ISTEP exam, or not at grade level at the end of the school year, will be required to take 30 additional days of instruction, which will run from 8:10 until 2:45.

Eiler feels confident the extra time in the classroom will help all Miller Elementary students succeed and catch up with their more academically successful peers.

The Lafayette Education Association, which represents the teachers, supports the move. Money to pay educators for the extra time will come from Title I and Federal Stimulus funding, along with the state Department of Education.

Classes in the LSC begin Monday.
