Fossils found at SW Indiana coal mine
(2009-08-18)
(wbaa) - Researchers at the Indiana State Museum have a new find to investigate.

A team has recovered tusks and skeletal remains of a mastodon from Knox County, about 15 miles north of Vincennes.

Workers at a coal mine site found the fossils last week, while digging 15-to-20 feet below the surface.

Officials say there are many intact rib bones - four to five feet long - two partial tusks, a few vertebrae and a couple knee joints the size of five-gallon buckets.

The remains likely are more than 12,000 years old.
