Late Blight confirmed in Tippecanoe, two other counties
(2009-08-07)
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
A fungal disease, harmful to tomato and potato plants, is present in Tippecanoe County.Purdue's Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab confirmed Late Blight on tomatoes here, and in Vermillion and Bartholomew counties.
Director Tom Creswell says control measures are complicated for commercial growers and homeowners have limited options, but a fungicide with chlorothalonil should be used as a preventive measure.
Creswell says when late blight is present, the entire plant should be covered with a plastic bag, sealed and thrown in the trash.
He says composting the plant will cause the fungus to spread.
