IN Invasive Species Council based at Purdue
(2009-04-27)
(wbaa) - After months of research and debate, Indiana will soon have an Invasive Species Council.

The panel will be responsible for recommending priorities for projects, funding, and rules dealing with invasive plants, insects and animals.

It will be established this summer within Purdue's College of Agriculture.

Entomology Department Head Steve Yaninek says the university is leading the effort in the Midwest against invasive species, particularly the Emerald Ash Borer.

He says many states have an Invasive Species Council, because the problem is widespread and, in some cases, accelerating.

Funding for the council will come from the state, grants and gifts or donations.
