Smoking on Purdue's West Lafayette campus will be more restrictive beginning in July. The university is prohibiting smoking in all but a few designated areas. The ban includes all campus owned and leased vehicles.
Executive Vice President for Business and Finance, Treasurer Al Diaz will decide which areas will permit smoking.
He says the July 1st implementation date was chosen to give current smokers the opportunity to quit through smoking cessation programs offered by the Student Wellness Office and WorkLife Programs.
The university's current policy does not allow smoking inside buildings or within 30-feet of them.
According to Purdue, more than 300 universities nationwide are smoke free.
