Eli Lilly Announces Plan to Cut Jobs, Reorganize
(2009-09-14)
(wbaa) - Eli Lilly and company plans to cut thousands of jobs as part of a reorganization effort.

The 5,500 positions eliminated will come from the company's worldwide workforce, but where specific reductions will take place is not known yet.

Lilly operates a drug manufacturing facility in the Lafayette area, which employs about 800 people.

The pharmaceutical giant will restructure its operations in hopes of reducing expenses by $1 billion.

The patents on many of its most popular prescription drugs expire over the next several years, opening them up to generic competition.

The company's five new units are: Cancer, Diabetes, Established Markets, Emerging Markets and its animal health division.
