Indiana earns D grade for preterm births
(2009-11-17)
INDIANAPOLIS, IN
(wbaa) -
Indiana is getting a D on the latest Premature Birth Report Card from the March of Dimes. That's the same grade as the nation for 2008 births.Nearly 13% of babies born in Indiana last year were delivered pre-term, or before the 37th week of pregnancy.
However, there was improvement in the number of late pre-term births.
The March of Dimes is recognizing the state for lowering the number of uninsured women of child-bearing age.
But officials say more needs to be done to get those women to quit smoking.
