No central location found yet for TEMA equipment
(2010-02-09)
(wbaa) - A long debate about storing equipment for the Tippecanoe Emergency Management Agency ended without a clear course of action.

County commissioners were seeking permission from the council Tuesday to explore how much it would cost to build a pole barn on part of the land set aside for a juvenile justice center.

But several council members say they're concerned about spending any money given the current economy. John Basham first proposed rehabbing a building at the fairgrounds for the TEMA equipment, but later admitted money is too tight to do anything.

Other councilors say they want a space needs study before spending any money right now, because of budget concerns. Commissioner Dave Byers says paying for a study would be $150,000 to $200,000, which would pay for the barn on North 9th Street.

Commissioners say they will continue looking at other options, including talking with residents who contacted them with less expensive lease agreements.

The original idea was to rent space on Swisher Road for roughly $200,000 over two years, with the option to buy it.
