H1N1 found in Indiana commercial swine herd
(2009-11-03)
(wbaa) - At least four pigs in a commercial swine herd in Indiana have tested positive for H1N1.

These are the first commercial cases in the country according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

State officials will not provide the location of the commercial pigs, but say the animals were infected by humans.

But Purdue agricultural economist Chris Hurt does not expect any more problems for the pork industry.

He says much of the financial damage has already been done.

Hurt says any major price fluctuations would be found in the futures market.

Indiana slaughters about eight million pigs per year for the global food supply.

Hurt says previous bans on imports to countries such as China have already been relaxed.
