Report finds Purdue acted appropriately in lead notification
(2009-10-27)
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN
(wbaa) -
A report from Purdue's Office of Internal Audits says the university acted within state requirements when addressing high levels of lead found in campus drinking water. But the internal review indicates the need for officials to improve the way they notify the community of similar situations in the future.
The university discovered in September that five campus buildings had excessive levels of lead in their water.
The campus was not alerted of the problem until early October.
The audit suggests the university develop a plan to verify critical announcements have been made, develop standards for timeliness, and establish a list of those who need to be notified.
The report is being sent to the vice president for physical facilities for review.
Water in Lynn Hall continues to exceed state lead standards.
Bottled water is being supplied to the building until the problem is corrected.
