WL School Corporation considering property tax referendum option
(2009-09-30)
(wbaa) - It seems West Lafayette residents will be voting on a property tax referendum in May for the school corporation. Board members are leaning toward approving a ballot question, but have until December to make a final decision.

The goal is to make-up for decreased funding from the state by raising anywhere from $3 million to $6 million locally.

Board member Kathy Anderson says asking constituents to dig deeper into their pockets is an unfortunate last result, but is necessary to keep the high-achieving school system.

Board members agree they will have a lot of persuading to do to get the ballot measure passed. President Dianne Sautter says it will take a lot of effort to educate residents about the need, but it can be done.

The corporation plans on polling residents to gauge current feelings about a tax referendum and more public meetings are planned to get the word out.

If it does gain approval in May, the corporation would start seeing more tax revenue for the 2011-2012 school year.
