WLCSC is considering a tax referendum proposal
(2009-09-16)
(wbaa) - West Lafayette school officials say a tax referendum is necessary to maintain the current corporation standards.

The district held a tax referendum forum Wednesday night to discuss how passes an additional tax could help the schools while not impacting local taxpayers too heavily.

A group of citizens signed a petition commissioning a study performed by Purdue economists Larry DeBoer and David Hummels.

They reported the corporation could see a revenue shortfall between $3 to $6 million over the next 10 years.

Superintendent Rocky Killion says the schools are already facing difficult economic decisions, and this could bring it back to "full strength."

He says a referendum totaling between $4 and $6 million would be ideal, which could translate to roughly $1 a day increase in property taxes for the median household.

If school officials want it on the May ballot, the board must act by December.

It would then be sent to the county council and then the county board of elections. The tax would last seven years.
